This change of starting players, was it something you had planned before or only decided after the game against NK?
We've been battling through many pressure-filled games. The EAFF Cup is an important event for Asia and for Japan. Even if we were unable to call the players from Europe, the ideal was to use these top J-league players who have contributed to the past number of games for our games here. But when I looked at the game content, I really saw how much fatigue was still left over. And I needed to give them a little time, which is how I came to my decision. But the other group (the squad against China) are really displaying their will to perform their best. I believe they will put on the national uniform and put on a performance that will do their country proud.
In this situation, this is how my decision turned out to be. When I decide on the 23 man roster, I put two players in each position, and this has the advantage of allowing me to play a new squad like this. But this is not an indication that I am going to dump all the other players for good, I truly just wanted them to rest and have a little time to adjust. In the NK game, the whole team was heavy, and I don't single out any specific player. They had the intention, but they were a step behind the opponent. And in the place where we need the most focus, in front of the goal, whether on attack or defense, we saw a lack of focus that was so uncharacteristic. And the quality of the shots also. Not just one or two players, but the entire unit. I saw this and felt their exhaustion. But there is still the game against Korea, and then the game against Iran, and I would like the benched group to find their way back.

He is the captain of this team and has always done a great job bringing the team together. He won't be starting tomorrow, but I want him to relay certain messages to the rest of the group: To maintain the same level of good atmosphere in and out of training that we've had all year, to tell the players who will start that they have nothing to worry about and just play without restrictions or hesitation. Instead of hearing it from me, I thought they should hear it from him. Also there are a number of brand new players, and I expect they will feel nervous; I wanted him to share a few words with them and let them know they should just have fun and play their game.
Another thing I wanted to mention. I made this decision, and made sure to tell the team first -- after which I revealed the information to you (the media). That is why I am answering these questions. I want to make sure that from now on, this is the shape of things -- that the players don't hear crucial information like this from a third-party (like the media), but hear it from me directly first, have them understand the situation, and then relay whatever information to you. This last bit was very interesting too. I've been following the way the media uses what Zico says in short interviews, turns it around, and uses it to bait comments from players by catching them off guard. It happened before the NK game in February, when the press in Europe told Nakamura and Takahara that they weren't going to be starting as they were preparing to head to Japan for the game. It caused a lot of frustration and confusion for the two players, and it was unfair. I am glad Zico's wisened up. Hopefully the players will follow the example; if they have questions or issues about something within the team, instead of mumbling about it to the sympathetic-acting reporters, they should first discuss it within the team.
