Roughly thirteen months ago, on the eve of the China vs. Japan final, after the local Chinese had spent a couple weeks booing and throwing things at the Japan team and supporters, and international news agencies had picked up on the story, the Chinese government had to step in and try and orchestrate a pre-match goodwill reception between the two sides.
I found this photo taken at that reception, and thought it was quite compelling. The handsome and dutiful captains of the two teams, unable to look at each other. Wearing practically identical training gear that differed only in color; if we didn't already know who was who, would we have even been able to tell which one belonged to which side?
Tonight's matchup will feature a host of new players on both sides. China is out of the World Cup, but will they show a performance that makes us think, "Well these guys definitely should have made it to Germany." Japan is safely qualified, but will this brand new squad of players come forward with a level of quality that competes with the world standard?

That's a great picture -perhaps they're looking at their translators -perhaps not.
it reminds me of the famous picture with Prince Charles and Diana in 1984?? (i don't know if you know it) Taken in South Korea and the first pointer that theirs wasn't a marriage made in heaven.

I remember the video footage from this reception (for lack of a better word), and these two never looked at each other, talked, or touched. They did, however, hold the Asia Cup silverware between them for a photo op. It was pretty strained back then -- the Japan team had gone through a lot of abuse, not only by the crowds but also the people managing the stadia and training grounds. But in a very twisted way, it was probably the best thing that happened to the team...
