It was a very mild weekend with temperatures high for this time of year and skies clear and sunny. The Japan National Team training camp in Miyazaki started off with the annual group photo -- this year the team donned the new away uniforms. This uniform has not yet been worn in a game, and will be put to the test in the upcoming game against the United States. The "katana" motif is still part of the design -- the eleven gray slashes on the left side represent the sword, and the collar is edged in red to include the rising sun red.
Things got off with quite a kick, as 8,000 spectators (some reports even claim as many as 10,000) came to catch a glimpse of the team -- a record number, more than doubling attendances in the past few years of January training camp. Given the attention despite the fact that none of the European (read: "more famous") stars were part of the squad, it may be an indication of the amount of scrutiny and expectation the team should get used to as we get closer to the World Cup.Before the training began, Zico gave a 5 minute speech to the players as they formed a circle on the field. It sounds as if he will be laying on the whip a little more this year. The first day's menu consisted of one and a half hours of running-oriented drills, mostly sprints. Most of the players had already started training either on their own or with their club, so the overall fitness levels were good. But things will get much more agonizing for the guys starting today (Monday), when the physical coach Satouchi will begin to push into the cardivascular and anaerobic.
If you look at the upcoming schedule in February (see bottom left column of this blog page), you will see we will be treated to four (count 'em FOUR) games next month, and traveling to and from America and Europe. The squad list will change during February, when the Europe-based players are expected to be available for call up. But I think this is a great opportunity for some of the other players who have not had as much opportunity, or are new to the squad.
Point of Interest 1: The return of Tatsuhiko Kubo is probably the biggest news of the past week. He has been away from the team for way over a year, and has come back to football with what seems to be a very new attitude about things. (I will do a profile on him in the upcoming weeks and go into detail there.) Kubo is considered superior in his athleticism and most importantly finishing -- with 8 goals, he has the most goals among the forwards.
Point of Interest 2: Having been off the squad for the latter part of 2005, Akira Kaji has been replaced by Yuichi Komano in recent months. It will be interesting to see whether Zico will go with Kaji or Komano for the practice/mini games, usually a good indication of who is closer to starting in Zico's mind.
Point of Interest 3: Of course it is always refreshing to see new faces on the squad, and the much awaited for opportunity going to Makoto Hasebe and Hisato Sato is something that is going to add a little spice to the competition among the players. Both players are very attractive attacking players. Hasebe has shown his dribbling and creativity, and can burst forth from the midfield. How his abilities compare in the international arena is something to look out for. Sato got the most goals last season in the J1 amonog Japanese players, and fans are looking forward to seeing how his type of forward (Sato has admitted he is a big fan of Inzargi and has incorporated Inargi-like thinking into his own play) meshes with the midfielders.
Point of Interest 4: The defense situation is also a little bit iffy, and I think this upcoming game against the United States will be very valuable in terms of our defenders. The system, using 3-back or 4-back, how our sidebacks do, how the centerbacks do, the communication between the back line and the midfield, whether we can compensate for lack of height, etc. The United States are a top team with an extremely high level of athleticism and finishing capability. The defenders will need to be speedy in movement and reflexes, and it will be a good way for them to measure themselves in those terms.
(click pic to enlarge)Personally I am happy to see Takeshi Fukunishi back. Also, would hope that Zico gives Shinji Murai more chances on the left side. We just haven't seen enough of him in the NT to get a good sense of how he combines with the rest of the team. At Urawa, left side Alex Santos' position is being threatened by the acquisition of Takahito Soma from Verdy. A year ago, Soma was considered a contender for NT call up, but it never happened. His move to Reds is a curious one, and many will be eyeing the competition between the two at the club. Giving Santos a little more pressure both at the club and on the NT (with the increased use of Murai) will be I think a good thing, as he seems to be coasting a little in this past year or two.Shinji Ono will join the team on Feb 1.
The group will fly to the US on Feb 5.

wow, crazy¡Á!!
the schedule, against all different continents, all round the world¡£
and surprise¡Á!!
the new away jersey, so soon after the home change, i had thought it might be using alternate years, but guess everything is catering to the World Cup year¡£
first impression: that fat grey line is suffocating the wildness of the katana slashes, and the previous 'unclean' white is a stronger colour.
however, those slashes are just too awesome, never seen something like it¡Á

Nice report on the Miyazaki training camp. Looking forward to seeing Japan in in my hometown San Francisco next week, Two of my favorite teams going head to head, should be an entertaining match. USA's forwards will give your backline a challenge, very atheletic but not always the best finishers.
Nice report man, I hope that Japan are going to get some good results, since their form hasn't been that good lately. Trouble against inferior Asian teams, that sort of thing.
GO JAPAN!!!!! btw i reckon teh away shirts look alright, but i'm not fond of white, but the design looks a bit better than the home jersey, i mean the home jersey looks alright, but the collar looks ergg, i like the away jersey collar better

USA have been recent in an excellent form: 5-0 against Norway, wich is a very hard team to beat...
I wonder how Zico will treat this match..

there is a rumour that the former Man U star would join the J-League.
Doesn't he play in the A-League with Sydney FC???....i wouldn't think Sydney FC would want to let go of Yorke....

they will let him go. because his contract will expire in march(at the end of the A-League).
first he wanted to join the romanian first division(wich was the best in european soccer last year, having 3 teams from one city in uefa cup group stage)but then he changed his mind for more money that the J-League could offer him. For sure Yorke will join a J1 team, because he said he wanted to be prepared for the world cup in Germany. if he finds a good team and plays well then he'll be a regular in T&T NT.

Oh ok, didn't know about that^^
J-League pays too much money specially to "overseas" players, ofcourse it may be a strategical advantage and also in advertising sense, but they pay too much....no wonder all the players who played overseas or for a country "before" who doesn't stand out in europe wants to come to Japan....

The foreign players playing in Japan usually are poor dudes that have had their highdays or are out of favour. Japan seems to have a fascination for foreign players while they're crap and everyone knows they are.
well the scoreline wasn't that bad, at least they did score somegoals and they lost narrowly, i'd thought they would draw...well i'm so shocked of WEST BROM I KNEW THEY WERE ERGGGG....but i didn't know that they were THAT erggg!...well FULHAM WON :) but i feel sorry for inamoto because his team lost with a big score line 6-1...erggg, i'd never show my face again after that game if i were a baggie...but i'm a fulham fan so HAHA to west brom, apart from inamoto (i feelfor him)

That was a close scoreline.(everyone thinks..) But the first half USA made a huge pressure on Japan that made them go with an excellent 2-0 into the second half where they scored for 3-0. Japan was not very inspired at all, very unsecure in defense and clearly outshoned by the physical power of the american players. But they came back with substitute Maki and too late with Nakazawa. The second half really showed that Japan can be capable of catching the lead back.(remember the game agianst Honduras 5-4!).
So if we think that USA beat Norway 5-0.. than a 3-2 wouldn't sound so bad at all. But it's the problem that USA wich hasn't a soccer tradition like Japan has, managed to put a really nice display(indeed.. home games..) and seems to become a football power like other teams from Asia.

yeh....it was surprising to see some of the domestic players doing well, such as Maki..i like Nakazawa's "never give up" attitude^^
It was nice to see Japan come back from 3-0(^_^)/

Went to the game up last Friday. Great atmosphere and entertaining match. Good turn out by the Japanese community in the Bay Area. The USA really surprised me on how they took control of the match early on. Never seen Japan held back for so long. Good to see Japan fight back for honor in the 2nd half. Zico, should dump the 3-6-1 experiment. It failed the USA in France '98 why should Japan use it also?
yes a 3-6-1 would sound stupid. zico, i think was trying to make pressure in the midfield and play a more japan-controlled build-up play. but it failed, considering the japanese lost a lot of duels with the americans who where physically stronger. but then the 3-6-1 can easily change to any of the defensive 5-4-1 or counterattacking 3-4-2-1. but like freddy said,it was a bad experiment for zico, and he should try finding the best formation for both defence and offence.
I have understood you practised on the part of my temerity, and that in which our old third-mate, who was always an inverted sort of acknowledgment for the occasion, however, not even quite all of us above the necessity of seeming timid in the West Indies, but of what book I had a taste, that Marble was very good authority for any young man, and we passed round the world.
This is no harm is meant.
Bradfort had left when I heard the fall of the Hudson so high, and by, and will be snapped up, I turned in, I observed that she is now thinking how happy a woman who had openly dishonoured.
You may well happen to me, Deerslayer, and that she had long ceased to do right, the distinctive features of the young women of my poor poor mother be in aclearin'?
